Beautiful Folk Music On Chloe Foy's New Video 'Asylum'

Chloe Foy’s latest single ‘Asylum’ has continued the success of her debut EP ‘Are We There Yet’ which drew industry acclaim from Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio 2 and 6 shows, and earned her place at SXSW 2018. ‘Asylum’ was released on all platforms on the 3rd of August and has already amassed 437,000 streams on Spotify.

Asylum embodies the hope in our darkest hours, and talks of friendship, loneliness and a search for solace. The video is Asylum’s perfect counterpart, with a simple and heartwarming narrative. Asylum’s video is Chloe’s most emotive video yet and follows Trev who’s authentic way of living juxtaposes the lives of so many.

Asylum - in Chloe’s words:

For me, Asylum encompasses a feeling of hope that I started to feel a few years ago after emerging from a dark period of my life. It acknowledges the ebb and flow and difficulty of modern life and the loneliness that can come with that – how you can sometimes feel like a distant observer of a very strange world. But it also acknowledges that we must be forgiving of ourselves, just as our closest friends are.

Chloe’s Bio:

Chloe Foy writes a brand of melodic, homegrown pop that has been likened to such artists as Laura Marling and Sharon Van Etten. Her songs are imbued with lyrical and textural inflections evocative of much of the music she loves - taking inspiration from classical music as much as wider trends within British and American Indie pop, Chloe’s music comprises of carefully constructed arrangements that delicately compliment her cryptic lyrics.

Having just returned from the US after a string of dates at SXSW Festival, Chloe has the backing of some highly influential industry figures. Her performance at The Driskill garnered support from Bob Boilen and NPR’s late night dispatches. Chloe also featured in Marches addition of The Storm Report in the ‘20 artists on our radar’ segment and will be covered in The Unsigned Guide’s Spotlight blog on the 5th of April.

Chloe has received substantial support from Steve Lamacq on his BBC Radio 2 & 6 shows.

The singles ‘In The Middle Of The Night’ and ‘Flaws’ have featured on a wealth of Spotify official playlists including Lost In The Woods and The Most Beautiful Songs In The World, generating over 2 million plays. ‘Are We There Yet’ has been prominently featured via Hype Machine listed blogs - We Love That, Ear To The Ground, Slow Show, and more.

RED LION VIDEO:

Fresh out of the South-West duo BAAST bring dark alternative pop, mesmeric synthesis and sound design intertwined with spoken word
and soulful vocals. Unafraid to tackle politicised themes of identity, their performance will captivate and challenge the way you’re told to
think. After a year of producing and writing together, they aim to bring a refreshing, brooding sound to the ears of listeners.
Formed by Beth Griffin (Grove) and Josh Petkovic’-Short (Diessa), the pair met in Cheltenham before developing their cohesive sound
through Studio 340, a creative community arts venue. Here, they began their out-of-the-ordinary journey.

Growing up in a limiting, restricted and conforming community, Beth was left feeling disconnected from her surroundings, while Josh
fell disillusioned with society. The years of inability to explore personal identity now fuels their ambition to craft songs that speak a
visceral truth about what it’s like to grow up with that disconnect. The importance of individuality is prominent throughout BAAST’s
performance, and their powerful tales charge through every second of each song.

The magnetising duo are highly anticipated within their local live scene, as both work on their solo projects. Josh releases left-field
electronic music under Diessa and runs label/art collective Gloam Recordings, working with the likes of Brian Eno endorsed artist R.ariel,
as well as Yuki Ame, LTO and Kayla Painter. Beth is also one of five within her hip-hop vocal collective group ‘5 Mics’ (Griz-O, JPDL).
As well as performing at Greenman Settlement Festival, Witcombe Cider Festival and Tadstock, she has supported the likes of Martha
Reeves & The Vandellas, The Hot 8 Brass Band and So Solid Crew.

VIDEO LIVE SESSION:

Led by the songwriting team of vocalist Louise Victoria and drummer, Mark Whitlam, We Are Leif deftly span the balance of jazz sensibilities with the groove and sound more associated with down-tempo genres like Neo-Soul and R'n'B. Louise's voice sits comfortably alongside the company of Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens. Musically there are nods in the direction of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott whilst retaining a classic Bristol sound, steeped in the history of bands like Portishead, Massive Attack and Lamb.

A chance meeting of vocalist Louise Victoria and drummer Mark Whitlam at a gig led to a conversation about the frustration of wanting to stretch out musically in a different direction. This direction was looking towards New York's contemporary, groove-based, jazz-infused musical scene, whilst not forgetting the UK influences.

From there, Louise and Mark began writing together and assembled the band with one of Mark's long-time collaborators, Dale Hambridge on keyboards and piano, completed by Chris Jones who recently moved to Bristol and has made waves on the local scene with his bass playing.

All four band-mates are established jazz musicians, so improvisations taking flight within a song are never far away. Between them, they span a wide musical landscape, having worked with the likes of ECM artists Andy Sheppard and Iain Ballamy, Joss Stone, Beverley Knight, Jason Rebello, Ruarri Jones, Clare Teal and Type Sun.

The debut album ‘Breathe’ is due in September, and to launch this We Are Leif will be playing at the Pizza Express Live night in London on Sunday 9th September. This is an exclusive, one night only, performance.

Social Room are a 6-piece band from Sunderland influenced by many of the most established Brit-pop & New Wave groups of the 90's.

Social Room bring back much of that classic sound and more with the added flavour of modern indie groups. They boast undeniably pleasing vocals, catchy lyrics and riffs; and the dynamics of their sound is un-thwarted with the inclusion of synths.

The group has been establishing themselves over the past year and a half (in particular) around the North East with some great festival gigs, most recently under The Farm & Happy Mondays to a crowd of around 3000, many saying Social Room were the buzz of the day.

Social Room remain an unsigned group but have accomplished a lot without teams of marketing experts to carry them, from the feedback they've received this could be a band to be picked up very soon and played to the many over the airwaves.

Social Room’s new E.P. ‘BRIGHTSTAR’ will be released in September and contains both the first single ‘Lets Talk’ and new single ‘Bright Star’ which will also be released in September.

REMI INFO / INTERVIEW – C/O LOUIS JANI (BASIS MAGAZINE)

I first discovered Remi, the musical alias of an old school acquaintance, through shared spheres of influence on Twitter, and upon watching the visuals for his latest collaborative efforts with the Peoples team, I wished to learn about the approach to contemporary hip hop in a post-internet London.

Meeting on Oxford Street, we walk and talk as we make our way round the clothing stores around Soho. We discuss a lot: musical style versus musical wave, fashion tastes versus clothing trends. This is the crux of Remi’s philosophy - disenfranchisement. ‘That’s globalism, everything is accessible by everyone’, he says as we pass by stores that, give or take five years ago, would be free from backpacking culture vultures. It seems a cliched observation, but when authenticity can be bought so freely as a costume, you have to look for other ways to represent yourself than a post code or a clothing company.

It is interesting to note then, that before our meeting, I knew Remi most recently by the screen name Stephen Loco. This could be mistaken for the same fickleness that he resents in the music industry, aesthetic waves that are more style than substance. However, his focus is wildly different from so-called internet rappers. With chopped and screwed production dating back a few years, and forays into the rap scene from 2014 onwards, Remi has been honing his art, and to a point. ‘I spend a lot of time thinking about what kind of fans I want,’ he says when asked about his approach, and he is wary of chasing a wave or building on an existing movement with weak credentials. The London-based collective that he is working with others to build, Peoples, is as elusive as it is intriguing. This is not a hype-building venture. On their endeavours, he states he is ‘under so much stress, all the time,’ with a self-enforced goal for an independent launch in the very near future.

Taking inspiration from many a place, the multi-instrumentalist is a critic in his own right. Remi grimaces at a Supreme hoodie emblazoned with a Skepta graphic. ‘As a grown man, I could never wear another man on me,’ he says laughingly, but to him this is another example of the surface-level appreciation for musical culture. ‘When Azealia Banks said what she did about British hip hop people got offended, but was she wrong?’ he argues that the UK does not have a true legacy when it comes to hip hop: the titans of grime can rap, but if our best offering is Skepta and Stormzy are we being left in the dust once their wave ends? In relation to a conversation between us about the long-awaited and (arguably) conceptually scarce Konnichiwa, I questioned perhaps the role of the album in an age where the distinction between the paid mixtape and short album has been both blurred and exploited equally by the current generation of rappers. He shows me his phone’s music player, a trove of unreleased loosies and incomplete albums.

Peoples’ plan is strategic, each single to date a progression on the last and always moving their sound forward. Guitar licks blend with heavy bass kicks, with tongue-in-cheek hooks and poetic delivery. On Closed Circuit, the first single with visuals from A House On The Rise, he raps over a discordant soundscape with aggressive but reserved intent. Lyricism is always at the forefront, but for Remi and company, songwriting is key. With an extensive knowledge base when it comes to emerging sounds in urban music, he sees this as holding back even the work of his personal greats, such as SpaceGhostPurrp’s Raider Klan whose sound was popularised and developed by the likes of A$AP Rocky, Bones, and a torrent of similar cloud rap artists. If you can deliver a verse, but not a hook, he argues that your sound will remain incomplete. Now, with their own dedicated studio and access to all their equipment needs, they need only perfect and assemble the pieces they already have.

Originating from the now defunct outfit Purple Zebra, he tells me how he has a lot of catching up to do to get to the other members of Peoples’ levels. He thinks they all have catching up to do. Purple Zebra, featuring several artists including Peoples’ own SWIM, was only a fledgling act but enjoyed some success with live shows alongside the likes of Bev LDN at London venue 229. At times overly critical, it is however positive rather than pessimistic to see such an analytical approach to the art. Remi reflects on a show he opened for recently. ‘It went well… but with what I’ve learned now, I could do better.’ The slow resolve of Peoples and their associated artists seems only to prove the fable correct - this is far from the struggle rap filling up Soundcloud.

When asked about the visuals currently released on Peoples’ YouTube, he explains that himself and his frequent collaborators are extremely particular about many aspects. Lighting, for example, is carefully planned ahead of time, with filters applied to all the bulbs in their studio for the filming of Rose Royce, or fellow member Sans’ insistence on the glow of orange streetlights for 1up. Other times, things seem to fall into place. From riding round the streets of London at night until finding themselves stopping next to a certain poster, or meticulously planning a documentary for a future gallery booking, Peoples embrace fate and design in equal measure. Remi’s ambitions extend past music and into other mediums for his art - invading the home with eye-catching posters, or the wardrobe with quality garments. Music, he says, is not his end point: ‘I don’t want to still be rapping in two years’. There is a promising gap in a packed London for a talent house that scouts the best in people, detached from flawed ideas of realness, and Peoples may be just that group.

Peoples, by name alone, has representation and mentality at their core. The appeal comes not from making a trend, but from an all-encompassing way of thinking. Realness isn’t part of the equation as far as Remi is concerned. He spends a lot of time thinking about what sort of fanbase he would want, and has decided he wants a following for perspective. On both an aural and visual level, Peoples is bringing this perspective with them, but their hindsight tells them the wake is as important as the wave. Peoples is a house on the rise, with a foundation in sight, but the house has to be built first. For now, we will have to wait.  (Louis Jani)

ED IS DEAD Releases Reworking Of His Classic Album

ED IS DEAD "#YL48H REWORKED"
AVAILABLE AUG 2018

Your Last 48 hours Reworked, the full reinterpretation of Ed is Dead’s second album will be available in all digital platforms June 29.

#YL48H Reworked is the individual picture given by several different authors about the topic that gives name to this conceptual record. What would you do if you had only 48 hours left to live?

O mer, Piek, Skygaze, Dub Elements, North State, EdOne, Clara Brea, BSN posse, Vlack Motor and Ed is Dead himself have been the creators of a completely new album based on Ed is Dead #YL48H, deconstructing every track to generate a new musical speech.

Ed is Dead claims "The difficult part was to get rid of all the heritage and habit of creating the orginal track, and try to take the story to a completely different place, a delicate and emotional one. This album is basically about that, about introducing different musical points of view of the same story.”

#YL48H Reworked begins with “Rob a Bank”, from the hand of Ed is Dead. The very first seconds of the track provoke the expectation to which we are used to coming from him, achieved by sounds able to sink anyone’s heart, only to then resolve into a fantastic and way more intimate and intense reinterpretation, where the sounds shape an immersive atmosphere.

Skygaze is the musical project of Jaime Tellado, responsable for the remake of “Kidnap a Politician”. This is maybe one of the most contrasting versions of the album. Unclassifiable, with a flawless production saddled between IDM and breaks, a bass line dominating the whole track and one of the most organic drum grooves of the record. An extraordinay twist for a instrumental track full of message.

On the original “Have a Fight” theme, Ed is Dead counted on the presence and voice of Laia Vehí, member of North State band together with her brother Pau Vehí. She has also performed as a singer in this reinterpretation. Between the two they get this “fight” to stand amid future garage and present electronic pop.

Piek, winner of the best national electronic music album of 2017 by Dj Mag, has been the one in charge of providing a cinematic atmosphere to “Make Someone Happy”, transforming it into a delicate track with an epic finale.

The version of “Spend Sometime With You” has come from the hand of Clara Brea, who has contributed with her personal sound towards giving the song an ambient and experimental touch, making it even more special if possible.

O mer is one of the highlights of the album. The Tel Aviv producer settled in Brooklyn has become one of the most promising artists of the international electronic music scene. In his particular vision of “Get Drunk”, he transforms the track into a journey where the voice of Nikki García leads a constant in crescendo and where O mer exhibits his outstanding musical production ways. A true gem of the album!

The new version of “Heroin”, aimed at the techno dance floor, comes from the hand of EdOne. Music enthusiast from an early age, he counts on the support of artists of the size of Maceo Plex, John Digweed, Dixon, Luca Bacchetti or Nicole Moudaber, among others.

Vlack Motor gives the Glitch Hop touch to this new version of “Jump Out of An Airplane”. A new aka for the Madrid based producer and old acquaintance of Ed is Dead, with whom he shared training in the first years of Baselab, and who later led the DREMEN production.

BSN Posse is the result of the union of Sergio Ruiz (Stay Puft) and Enrique Gervilla (Broken Lip), members of the drum’n’bass Memory Call colective. This duo mix in their music styles like hip hop, soul and funk, and they express it through footwork. They have been the authors of the new version of “Drive Fast”, where they take the strong african rhythm original nature to the next level, taking over the track and transforming it into a demonstration of power from the creators of Iberian Juke.

The Sevillian duo Dub Elements have given a twist to the las track of #YL48H, “Family Dance”, contributing with their authentic Drum n Bass sound, and combining amazing bass lines with compulsive and addictive beats. A totally UK flavor to complete an album that, as the original, intends to be an example of the current electronic music trends.

From its launch in November 2017, #YL48H has exceeded 1.5 million plays on Spotify, it has been listed as the best national electronic music album of 2017 by MondoSonoro, it has entered the Top10 of best electronic music albums by Dj Mag and it has won the MIN Prize to the Best Electronic Music Recording; therefore, we have absolutely no doubt that this reinterpretation will give a lot to talk about in the coming months.

The second release from Boxwork’s eponymous Boxwork Music label comes again from the man himself. ‘Trench’ is the successor to ‘Dive Left’Boxwork’s first full length released on Shades Recordings last year; it takes the listener even further down the rabbit hole into the imagined world that Boxwork’s mad music inhabits. In his typical fashion, ‘Trench’ covers lots of musical ground. This record has no genre but is influenced by them all. Boxwork signatures are there in droves though, of course. Lots of tempos, obscure samples, and music as intensely melodic,
percussive, sonic experiments and explorations. Music by a man in a white coat and lab specs. ‘Trench’follows ‘Heading North’ as offering number two on the Boxwork Music label. Boxwork says of the label “Its an outlet for un-compromised musical decisions, putting family first”.
The two releases could hardly be more different and it’s a measure of the skill, versatility and musicality Boxwork brings to the party that the two records are composed by the same man. It’s why his new composition project Builder’s Tea is brewing up nicely over in the world of moving pictures.
With original artwork by Craig Johnson II and a limited-edition vinyl package including an artwork print also available, Boxwork Music has the format and collector
geek in you covered too. ‘Trench’ is available to stream and download via all your favourite channels (please don’t pirate this shit).
